Internal gravity waves are believed to be excited by convective overshoot in the solar atmosphere. We compare the results from numerical simulations of the overshoot region of compressible convection into a stable photosphere, with observations of the velocity field at several heights in the solar atmosphere. We find a consistent picture for the quiet middle/upper photosphere in which internal gravity waves are the dominant phenomenon at low frequencies (< 2.5 mHz). We estimate the contribution of these waves to the energy balance in the photosphere and low chromosphere.
