An analysis is given of the large-scale photospheric currents in an early-type star, which is a detached component of a close binary, and whose surface is non-uniformly heated by the radiation from its companion. Uniformly valid solutions are constructed, assuming that the ratio of the incident to outgoing fluxes at the surface remains less than unity. The mean steady flow that is caused by the presence of a permanent "hot spot" is confined to a (turbulent) viscous boundary layer, the so-called inertial terms being negligible in this thin superficial shell. The circulation speeds are many orders of magnitude slower than the various (sonic and supersonic) estimates that can be found in the literature. Hence, the role of these photospheric currents is probably much less important than has been suggested in these studies.
