In Europe, the EXOSAT and ROSAT missions will continue the X-ray astronomical research into the 1980's. EXOSAT is almost ready for launch, which will hopefully happen still this year. The launch of ROSAT is scheduled for midth of 1987. Apart from these two approved projects, there are various studies on X-ray astronomy satellites under way. Within ESA, a study of an X-ray timing and spectroscopy mission called X-80 has almost been completed. X-80 is one candidate amongst five for ESA's next scientific project, the selection of which will take place in February 1983. The approved missions, the scientific objections and instrumentation of EXOSAT and ROSAT are described.
