Highly nonstationary accretion onto a magnetized neutron star from a surrounding accretion disc is considered. Nonstationary accretion has been considered before in terms of droplets or rain or as a necessary consequence of instabilities in the accretion column flow. Here, the extreme of very large units is considered, which by magnetic flow field compression reach the neutron star surface as highly elongated structures, and are termed broomsticks. In this model, these broomsticks are optically thick. Their rate of occurrence has to be sufficiently small so that the column as a whole is optically thin outside the broomstick. Possible consequences of such a model are discussed.
