I discuss the thermal-viscous instability that is thought to beresponsible for the outbursts of dwarf novae in cataclysmic binariesand soft X-ray transients in low-mass X-ray binaries, and thatcould be present in young stellar objects as well as AGNs. I show thatthe illumination of the disk and of the companion star, as well as changesin the outer disk radius must be included in the models if one wishesto extract meaningful physical information on e.g. viscosity fromthe comparison of predicted and observed lightcurves.
