The correlation between the color excesses E(B-V) and the absolute magnitudes of supernovas distorted by absorption in the complex around the Virgo cluster of galaxies is investigated. It is shown that type 1 supernovas with different reddenings have equal mean luminosities only when an allowance is made for the absorption (attenuation) of light according to a given relation. When this allowance is made, it is found that moderately reddened type 1 supernovas in spiral galaxies make standard candles that are nearly as satisfactory as type 1 supernovas in elliptical galaxies.
