The coupling of MHD surface modes generated by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities with body waves in the jet's plasma is investigated in the framework of the morphology and energetics of jets in extragalactic radio sources. It is shown that, whenever an inhomogeneous boundary layer is present, the possibility exists for a conversion of a resonant mode into kinetic Alfven waves which propagate transversely to thymagnetic field toward the jet's interior. They may then provide relativistic electron acceleration and plasma heating which are calculated to be adequate for the support of such radio emission as that of the sources M 87, Cen A, etc.
