The effect of buoyancy on jet flow stability is considered in an analysis of long wavelength disturbances in jets confined by the thermodynamic pressure of the surrounding medium. It is found that the effect of buoyancy will be strong when either the jet velocity is near the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability or the energy density of the magnetic field in the jet is much lower than the equipartition value. This case would also arise when most of the internal jet pressure was due to protons or other material that was not emitting synchrotron radiation at radio frequencies.
