The equation used in 1915 by Jeans, who showed that the basic set of equations for galactic dynamics is formed by this equation together with Poisson's equation, is often referred to as the Vlasov equation. Vlasov's subsequent contribution consisted in showing that, in a very similar way, the appropriate set of equations for a plasma is formed by this equation in combination with Maxwell's equations in many cases. A survey of textbooks and papers reveals that this equation goes by seven different names: the Liouville equation, Boltzmann equation, collisionless Boltzmann equation, Liouville-Boltzmann equation, Jeans equation, equation of continuity, and Vlasov equation. It is proposed that the name 'collisionless Boltzmann equation' become the standard.
