The present investigation has the objective to provide a general framework for the analysis of optically thin synchrotron spectra from inhomogeneous sources, quantitatively allowing for the possibility that the maximum radiated frequency may vary systematically across the source. The presented formalism makes it possible to determine the precise effect upon the optically thin synchrotron spectrum of inhomogeneous source conditions, including the possibility of a radially varying maximum energy cut-off in the radiating particle distribution. Although the analysis is formally similar in both the monoenergetic and power-law distribution case, the two cases have distinguishing features. Application of the considered model to galaxies exhibiting a complex C- spectrum suggests that their radio spectrum can indeed be interpreted in terms of inhomogeneous sources.
