Herschel is the fourth of the European Space Agency’s Cornerstone missions and is soon to be launched to its orbital position at L2. The Observatory is open to the international community for proposals to make far-infrared and submillimeter astronomical observations.
MAJOR SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES of this 3.5m Space Observatory include:
* Study the formation of galaxies in the early universe and their subsequent evolution.
* Investigate the creation of stars and their interaction with the interstellar medium.
* Observe the chemical composition of the atmospheres and surfaces of comets, planets and satellites.
* Examine the molecular chemistry of the universe.
This poster gives an overview of Herschel capabilities and opportunities for the astronomical community.
