Space-environment effects on solar sails at a perihelion from initially parabolic solar orbits are considered. The study of the effects of interaction of the solar radiation with the sail is presented. The diversity of physical processes of the interaction of photons, electrons and protons with metallic foil atoms and nuclei, are analyzed. Results of the ionization by solar UV, X- and Gamma-rays are presented. Because some products of collisions between high-energy particles and sail material are radioactive, some structural weakening of sails performing close solar flybys might occur.
We considered different candidate sail metallic films and studied the dependence of the metallic films reflection on the thickness of the films. Sail performance was then calculated based on the temperature balance near the sun. The isothermal spheres for the solar sailing near the sun were determine for different candidate sail metallic films based on the thermal equilibrium between the total absorbed energy and total emitted energy by the sail
