The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System(VERITAS) is a system of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes designed for gamma-ray astronomy in the range from 100 GeV up to 20 TeV energies. VERITAS is located at the Whipple Observatory at Mt. Hopkins in southern Arizona, USA, and the first telescope has been operating since the beginning of 2005. Observations with the array of two telescopes started in February 2006 and are still ongoing. The construction of the third and fourth telescopes started in Summer 2006 and is planned to be finished in January 2007. An overview will be presented on the construction and the initial observation program. Data has been recorded from several different potential gamma-ray sources, mostly for technical commissioning and calibration purposes. Preliminary analysis results will be shown for the Crab plerion and other sources that VERITAS has collected data so far.
