The relative importance of Poynting flux and particle precipitation as high-latitude energy sources has been the subject of recent discussion. For example, the 24-25 September 1998 geomagnetic storm, which resulted in ionospheric outflows from dayside magnetic local times, has been investigated in this context using data from Polar, FAST, DMSP, and auroral imaging. For the September 1998 event the two energies sources have both been shown to have significant correlation with ionospheric outflow. In this paper we extend an earlier investigation of topside ion upwelling to include additional outflow events with the goal of determining if the conclusions from the 24-25 September 1998 storm apply to other events. In particular, we examine topside ion upflow using DMSP drift meter and SSJ4 energy data from 4 DMSP satellites (F11, F12, F13, F14; ~830 km) along with Polar UVI auroral images that provide a global frame of reference and time history. Data is examined for three extended periods in 1998: May 2-5, Aug 26-27, and Sep 24-25. Poynting flux and electron energetics are estimated from the DMSP data. Ionospheric outflow is examined as a function of incident Poynting flux, electron and ion precipitation, and auroral intensity at the time of the DMSP observation as well as at selected times prior to the in situ observation. This allows us to determine the correlation of ionospheric response to external drivers and to examine the utility of auroral observations as remote indicators of ionospheric outflow.
