The Charge-Energy-Mass Spectrometer (CHEMS), one of three sensors comprising the MIMI investigation on Cassini, measures the mass and charge state of ions in the energy per charge range 3-220 keV/e. Since entering orbit about Saturn, CHEMS has observed a persistent ion population in the L = 6-11 range. This population is dominated by protons, singly charged oxygen, and molecular hydrogen ions. Other water products and trace ions are present. The intensity of this quasi-trapped population varies from orbit to orbit and in some cases appears to respond to major solar wind compressions of Saturn's magnetosphere. During the orbit with periapsis on Nov. 27, 2005 (day 331), the trapped population was particularly intense. CHEMS measurements of pick-up He+ outside the magnetosphere indicate that the solar wind speed was quite high. We will present the energy spectra of the various ion species, compare them with quieter passes, and discuss possible energization process(es).
