Dust is an important component of galactic stucture and the cyclic processing of particulate matter leads to stellar and planetary formation. Though astronomical methods using analysis of dust-penetrating starlight can provide some limited information about the dust, the prospect of its in-situ sampling within the Solar System by spacecraft and its remote sensing by ground-based techniques open up a new field in galactic exploration.
