Usefulness and errors of radiation budget estimates of spectral data from satellites, carrying narrow band radiometers, are demonstrated. Spectral radiance measurements can provide valuable estimates of the planetary radiation fluxes if certain points are taken into account. Firstly, the outgoing longwave flux density depends both on the temperature of the underlying surface (ground or cloud) and on the water vapor (WV) content of the atmosphere above. Sufficient information about these two parameters is contained in just two channels, a window channel and a 6.3 micro m WV channel. Corrections for zenith angle dependence can be applied easily by the help of model calculations. Secondly, the reflected shortwave flux can be calculated from spectral measurement in the visible region, although these spectral values do not provide information about water vapor absorption of solar radiation. This error, however, is probably negligible if compared to other errors inherent in the measurements themselves and in model calculations.
