Pluto is probably the only solar system object where hydrodynamic escape is an ongoing process. The escape flux is limited by the energy supply. Previous estimates of the maximum escape rate of nitrogen from the planet were on the order of ˜ 1 x 1028 s-1. It was previously suggested that the escape rate decreases by a factor of 3 to 4 due to the reduction of available solar energy during the transition from solar maximum to solar minimum. In this work we find that the escape rate is very sensitive to the temperature profile suggesting a greater variation of the escape rate over the solar cycle than previously proposed.
