In order to study the ejection processes of sodium atoms from Jovian satellite Io, high dispersion spectroscopic observation was carried out at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, using a 188-cm telescope and a High Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (HIDES: R=100,000) in February, 2004. High dispersion spectra of sodium emission were obtained for a region of ±1.5RJ (1RJ : Jovian radius = 71400km) centered on Io. Observation results on February 27, 2004 showed distinctive slow velocity component and fast velocity components. Slow components at 0.27RJ eastward and westward from Io showed different profile at their wings. Fast components between 0.1RJ eastward and 0.2RJ westward of Io showed several peaks in the velocity distribution. Particularly, three fast components with peaks at 15km/sec, 30km/sec, and 40km/sec were observed on the Io disk. Several physical processes have so far been proposed for ejection of sodium atoms from Io. These ejection processes include atmospheric sputtering for producing the banana cloud, pick-up ion neutralization in Io's atmosphere for the jet, pick-up molecular ion destruction in Io plasma torus for the stream, and charge exchange between Io's atmosphere and the torus. Computer simulations taking these four processes to explain the observation results are now in progress. In the presentation, observation and computer simulation results will be given.
