Most of our knowledge on the physical and chemical properties of icy grain mantles is based on the comparison between observations and laboratory experiments performed at low temperature (10-80 K). In laboratory it is also possible to simulate the effects of ion and UV irradiation of ices. Among these the formation of molecular species not present in the original sample. As an example here we discuss the case of ion irradiation of CO icy films. It is possible to search out the effects of ion irradiation of CO-rich icy mantles in dense molecular clouds through infrared observations of solid phase features as well as through radio observations of gas phase species. The latter are in fact formed in the solid phase and are released to the gas phase after sublimation of icy grain mantles.
