Interstellar molecules are known to be present in various environments, from diffuse gas permeated by FUV radiations, to dense and well shielded cores. In the following, we discuss how PDR models can now be used to under- stand the chemistry of these regions and to probe the most relevant physical and chemical processes, and how the comparison with observations leads to advances in the modeling work. We present three examples : 1- new developments allowing a more accurate treatment of the penetration of FUV radiation in interstellar gas, 2- the impact of turbulent mixing between cold and hot interstellar gas on diffuse matter chemistry, 3- the effect of slow shocks on molecular gas formation. Directions for future work are given in the conclusion.
