The characteristics of the number of weighted holes proposed as the evaluation criterion for the element arrangement of a super-synthesis array are investigated by using random number trial simulations. It is determined that this quantity exhibits a good correlation with the peak sidelobe level of the synthesized radiation pattern if an appropriate weighting function is used. In addition, a method is developed for optimizing the element arrangement using this number of weighted holes criterion. This trial-and-error method is designed so that the best possible synthesized image is obtained in a short period of time. A comparison of this method with other methods by using a super-synthesis simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of this method.
