The present investigation is concerned with a general exposition of the cosmological problem. The investigation consists of two parts. In connection with the first part, a comparison is conducted of two different basic approaches which have been used in dealing with cosmology. These approaches are related to mythology and to science. It is demonstrated that the 'big bang' concept belongs to the first category. The cosmology considered by Klein (1966), which is now frequently called 'symmetrical cosmology', was conceived in connection with a critical evaluation of the basic principles of the big bang. The second part of the investigation is concerned with an examination of details regarding Klein's cosmology. It is shown that the assumption of a universe exhibiting symmetry with respect to particles and antiparticles is not incompatible with observational facts. The annihilation process in which matter and antimatter combine could be responsible for the liberation of the vast amount of energy observed in the case of the quasi-stellar objects.
