The claim of Soneira that his analysis "conclusively rules out the square (redshift-distance) law for the small redshift region" is shown to be unfounded in several respects. The central equation of the underlying theory presented, which gives the regression of redshift on magnitude, log = (p/5)m + const, is not valid in the small redshift region, or any other limited region. More specifically, when z is restricted to the region z0 < z < z1, where z0 is sufficiently large that peculiar motions and local perturbations can be neglected and z1 sufficiently small that space curvature and higher order effects can also be neglected, a correct equation takes the form: log = (P/5)m + T(m), where the term T(m) is such that ∂T/∂m is materially dependent on the luminosity function. Given any shape for the latter, a ∂T/∂m can have any value from - (p/5) to 0, as the dispersion ranges from extremely great to extremely small. The slope of the log relation may correspondingly vary from 0 to p/5, and thus need not be at all indicative of the true value of the redshift-distance exponent p. Doubtful observational and statistical features of Soneira's analysis are also noted, as are some inappropriate descriptions of the analysis of which he is critical.
