We propose an XMM-Newton survey of a sample of nearby galaxy groups and poor clusters selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The groups have been selected to overlap with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The XMM observations will be combined with optical imaging and spectroscopy from the SDSS to: 1) Determine the properties of the intragroup medium in a representative sample of X-ray groups; 2) Extend the recent studies of the temperature and mass profiles of rich clusters down to the scales of groups; 3) Measure entropy profiles to constrain the role of heating and cooling in groups; 4) Provide a comparison sample for intermediate-redshift groups being studied with XMM and 5) Compare the AGN populations in X-ray groups to clusters.
