We propose a 100 ks observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388 in the Virgo cluster. The presence of spectacular optical emission-line nebula extending up to 35 kpc has been known for this galaxy. While soft X-ray emission appears to be associated with the optical filaments, as suggested by the previous Chandra and Suzaku observations, the details of the faint emission remains unclear. The major aim of this proposal is to study the morphology of the extended X-ray emission, the physical condition and its spatial variation. Another aim is high resolution spectroscopy with the RGS to investigate the excitation mechanism of the ionized gas. Possible nH variations in the strongly absorbed active nucleus will also be investigated to constrain the nature of the absorbing matter.
