A replot of period derivative against period is done for about 300 pulsars, and the main features of the plot are discussed. The implications of the gap in the plot for pulse nulling and subpulse drifting are assessed, and it is pointed out that except for a very few pulsars, all nulling pulsars show subpulse drifting behavior, and vice-versa, and that nulling and subpulse drifting pulsars are generally long period pulsars with period ranging from 0.23 s to 2.26 s. All the nulling and subpulse drifting pulsars are below the gap, and all appear to be old pulsars with characteristic ages above a million years. It appears that magnetic field decay occurs in pulsars such that they evolve probably smoothly with a sudden jump, following which they evolve slowly and discontinuously, characterized by nulling and subpulse drifting.
