The nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300 is ideal for studying X-ray populations of normal galaxies. We propose a 130 ks observation of NGC 300 for studying its evolving population, as well as the 11th Z-source candidate, and a contraversial supersoft transient. We will conduct a comprehensive follow-up counterpart program, using guaranteed time on the 11 m SALT telescope. The main drive is to construct an accurate X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the point source population. XLFs have a long been used as diagnostic tools for examining external galaxies. However, almost all XLFs to date have assumed a single emission model when converting from intensity to flux. This approach is misleading, because the observed X-ray spectra are so varied.
