The creation of electron-positron pairs in an inhomogeneous magnetic field is treated. It is shown that when B exceeds 5 x 10 to the 12th G and the gamma-ray energy is less than 10 to the 4th MeV, the particles are created in the zeroth Landau levels (n = n-prime = 0). For weaker fields, the distribution of the particles produced is investigated in relation to the numbers of the Landau levels. When the gamma-ray energy is less than 10 to the 8th MeV, the distribution is found to have a sharp peak at n = n-prime; when the energy is greater than 10 to the 8th MeV, however, the case where one of the particles acquires the entire energy is the most probable. The astrophysical ramifications of the results are discussed.
