The total relativistic particle content as a function of the diameter in supernova remnants is compared with the theoretical predictions from Bell's (1978) mechanism. The satisfactory agreement is seen as suggesting that the latter is an acceptable model. Only those remnants to which a distance (or a lower limit to the distance) can be assigned with some degree of reliability are singled out. In addition, the subset of remnants having a spectral radio index greater than 0.4 and less than 0.6 is selected. In the evolution of a general supernova remnant, it is assumed that there is injection only via Bell's mechanism, which is adopted here in its crudest form, and that the only losses are adiabatic.
