The Effelsberg 100m telescope was used to simultaneously map the NH3 (J,K) equals (1,1) and (2,2) lines with an angular resolution of 40 arcsec in the molecular cloud surrounding the 'bipolar nebula' S106. The NH3 cloud consists of two parts located east and west of the visible nebula. There is no indication that the cloud forms a rotating ring. The intensities of the NH3 (1,1) nuclear quadrupole HfS components show strong deviations from LTE, which are position dependent. The H2O maser reported by Cesarsky et al. (1978) was not found; instead a new maser 13 arcsec west of the central IR-point source was detected.
