Super star clusters and high mass versions of compact young massive clusters naturally occur in regions of intense star formation, usually starbursts. Young SSCs also prefer gas-rich regions, where the effects of their large ionizing and mechanical luminosities are readily observed. While SSCs normally are embedded in clouds of OB stars, they also exist in systems with a wide range in stellar surface densities and gravitational potential well depths, from starburst dwarf galaxies to the central regions of the dominant members of clusters of galaxies. These and other environmental features of nearby populations of SSCs are discussed in the context of the formation and evolution of these extraordinary objects and their host galaxies.
