A discussion is undertaken concerning what may be inferred about the structure of the presupernova star and supernova shock wave from observations, such as those in the radio and UV ranges for SN 1979c, which provide direct evidence of circumstellar material around a presupernova star. Evidence is found that the progenitor of a type II supernova is a red supergiant with a strong stellar wind, which is accelerated by the outburst of energetic radiation from the emerging supernova shock wave, creating a velocity distribution which falls off as the distance from the star squared. The hot gas behind the shock produces an observable UV continuum by Comptonization of soft photons from the photosphere, and by free-free emission, which may explain the UV excess of SN 1979c. Numerical models for the temperature and ionization structure are calculated and the dependence on the different parameters of the supernova and stellar wind is discussed.
