The physics of impact polarization is briefly reviewed in this paper. Methods for derivating the impact spectropolarimetric parameters relevant for the formation of H-alpha linear polarization are summarized. Spectropolarimetric techniques can provide information on the velocity distribution function of energetic particles. Since the most advanced application of this technique to astrophysics is in solar flare physics, recent results achieved by its application to particles accelerated in solar flares are presented.
