Am stars are usually assumed to be A-type stars belonging to binaries, which induce a tidal effect strong enough to reduce their rotational velocity and result in Am abnormal abundancies. This assumption led us to observe many Am stars with the CORAVEL spectro-velocimeter and ELODIE spectrograph, with the aim of detecting spectroscopic binaries and testing whether secondaries are important to create Am abnormal abundancies. We determined new orbital parameters for 80 Am binaries. In this paper we derive the mass ratio distribution from observed binary mass functions, assuming the primary mass to be constant and orbital spatial orientations to be uniformly distributed. We obtain a distribution centered on q=0.56, which corresponds to a secondary mass of 1.4 Msun. For this task we compute the Richardson-Lucy inverse with a Monte Carlo algorithm.
