The principle by which the ratios of the masses of the components of double-lined spectroscopic binaries can be measured is powerful, and attractive by its simplicity and directness. Yet for decades it proved scarcely possible to extract reliable results except in isolated cases. The development of a digital technique has given rise to a published series of precise mass ratios, and is leading to accurate, reliable physical parameters for the component stars. Such sets of parameters are vital for testing theories of stellar evolution. In addition, in the illustrious cases of chromospheric eclipse the same subtraction technique enables us to make dependable, quantitative examinations of stellar chromospheres for the first time. Our paper reviews the progress to date with this technique, and summarises some of the findings of the project. However, the statistics of the results are strongly influenced by the marked individuality of stellar objects.
