Long-slit spectroscopic observations of the NGC 1365 galaxy's nucleus show an apparently typical, intermediate Seyfert spectrum in which the broad Balmer lines exhibit an asymmetry towards the violet. The Seyfert 2 spectrum comes from a region several hundred parsecs in extent, containing at least a million solar masses of ionized gas. The Seyfert nucleus is surrounded by normal H II complexes with high oxygen abundance, continuing the slow, inward increase of heavy-element abundances found for H II regions in the spiral arms and bar. All the emission-line systems are heavily reddened. The possible role of non-thermal excitation must be allowed for in the derivation of abundances from emission lines in galactic nuclei.
