The generation of fluorescent H2O(+) emission in the upper atmosphere is examined in detail. This emission phenomenon is discussed in relation to the formation of ionospheric 'holes' (regions of sharply reduced electron density) due to rocket transit. The formation of such holes is explained by the ejection of combustion products into the ionosphere, particularly water and hydrogen molecules, which leads to the fast recombination of electrons and positive ions. Particular attention is given to the behavior of the mean critical frequency of the F2 region after the transit of Saturn-5.
