We demonstrate that near-infrared CVF spectrometry can be used to determine accurately the spectral type and luminosity class of K- and M-type stars. As an example, we show that the spectral type and luminosity class of the star HR 8881 given in the fourth edition of the Bright Star Catalogue are in error. HR 8881 is an M giant, probably in the range M2-3III, and not a type-K dwarf as listed.
