Chromian spinels from the Murchison meteorite are investigated using a variety of analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, ion microprobe analysis, and thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The spinels studied here are coarse and contain weight percent levels of FeO and Cr2O3, but have higher Mg/Fe and Al/Cr ratios than spinels (chromites) from ferromagnesian chondrules. Five zoning types (with respect to their Cr/Al ratios) are recognized: patchy, homogeneous, gradational, chevron, and core-rim. Many have inclusions of aluminous diopside and partially enclose forsterite olivine. Neither the high Cr and Fe contents of the spinels nor the crystallization sequence are consistent with equilibrium condensation from a gas of solar composition. Possible origins and sources as well as thermal histories of the spinels are discussed.
