The origin of millisecond pulsars is discussed. It is argued that these
pulsars are members of low-mass X-ray binary systems that have been spun
up to their present high spin rates by accreting material from their
companions. The discovery of the quasi-periodic X-ray source GX5-1 is
cited as strong support for the validity of this theory.
