Ground-based observations of Beta Pictoris, HL Tauri, and T Tauri, which relate to planetary formation, are discussed. Images of the disk surrounding Beta Pictoris obtained at wavelength bands centered at 0.45, 0.55, and 0.9 reveal that the reflectivity of the disk material is independent of wavelength and that therefore the light from the star is reflected from particles larger than 1 micron. The gas of the circumstellar disk of HL Tauri, in particular the CO and C-13 emissions, is examined. It is determined that the gas molecules revolve around the star in Keplerian orbits and the mass of the disk is one tenth that of the sun. The two concentrations of gas at about 500-600 AU out from T Tauri are identified.
