A rigorous solution obtained by Tong (1981) for the perturbing potential
with a nonwavy term is used to derive the relationship between the
thickness of a spiral galaxy and the initial radius at which the arms
begin. Initial radii and, hence, average thicknesses were determined for
50 spiral galaxies.
