It is noted that close binary systems with at least one component of moderate or late spectral type can show chromospheric activity and, consequently, anisotropic mass loss. A mathematical elaboration of a method to relate quantitatively such a mass loss with the corresponding intrinsic period change is presented. The method makes it possible to calculate the minimum amount of matter (2.2 x 10 to the -8 solar mass/yr) that has to be ejected to produce period changes comparable to those actually observed. Applied to the detached system TX Her, the results point to real, irregular period changes due to mass ejection from the surface of the secondary component rather than periodic apparent changes due to the light time effect in a triple system.
