Mizar (Arabic, `the Girdle') is the name given to ζ Ursae Majoris, the center star in the handle of the Plough, by J J Scaliger (1540-1609). The star was formerly known as Merak or Mirak, from the Arabic Al Marakk—`the Loin' (of the bear).
