It is shown that the study of head-tail radio galaxies associated with X-ray clusters of galaxies allows the simultaneous determination of the mean magnetic field in the radio lobes and the ratio between the energy density of the cosmic rays and the energy density of relativistic electrons. This is possible since the radio source is in an external medium of which the temperature and density are known. It is found that the energy of protons is the same as the energy of the electrons in the beginning of the tail of 5C 4.81, which indicates that mechanisms responsible for the acceleration of particles in radio sources are not the same as those producing the cosmic rays observed in the solar system.
