The OMEGA imaging spectrometer is mapping the surface of Mars composition at varying spatial resolution, from 300 m to 5 km, depending on the observation altitude. With its 352 contiguous spectral channels, covering the range 0.35 to 5.1 μm, it identifies most minerals and ices. The Mars surface exhibits a wide diversity of materials, indicating of major evolutionary steps that will be described and discussed.
