Phase-resolved spectroscopy of the AM Her star E1405-451 (V834 Cen) reveals complex phase-dependent emission line profiles which are clearly resolved into at least four components. A narrow spectral feature is interpreted as being produced in a region close to the secondary, which leads to an estimate of the stellar masses. The relative phasing, velocity amplitudes and widths of the remaining spectral components indicate that they are formed in parts of the accretion stream closer to the white dwarf and imply considerable structure within the accretion column. One of these components has a high velocity and appears over only a short phase region. The observations are used, in conjunction with the assumed dipolar field geometry, to construct an accretion stream trajectory which is consistent with the observations in other wavebands. There is no evidence for a correlation between the flickering activity of the continuum source and that of the line fluxes.
