A complete review of the most important techniques that are presently used to search for extrasolar planets is presented. After introducing the main theories concerning stellar evolution and the birth of planetary bodies from primordial protostellar clouds and protoplanetary disks, the following updated observational search techniques are described and discussed: spectroscopic method using gravitational wobbling, astrometric method, photometric method using transit/occultation, coronographic method, photometric method using gravitational microlensing, direct observational methods using interferometric, photometric and spectroscopic techniques. Several instrumental aspects are also discussed within the limits of the used optical, infrared and radio wavelength windows.
