In order to understand data measured by the TOMS instrument on Nimbus 7 after the eruption of El Chichon, absorption cross sections are measured in SO2 between 3000 and 3240 A at 295 and 210 K. Errors for these measurements range from less than 2 percent to about 10 percent. Measurements in the 3175 + or 5 A spectral region observed by TOMS indicate that there is a 9 percent reduction in the average cross section at 210 K compared to room-temperature data. Peak cross sections measured at low temperature show increases up to 20 percent over room-temperature data, while cross-section decreases are measured at low temperatures in the areas between the strong features.
